Briefly, I had the opportunity to interview the lovely Aaron Burch about the new craft anthology he edited, How to Write a Novel: An Anthology of 21 Craft Essays About Writing, None of Which Ever Mention Writing. It was a really fucking fun conversation, a really fucking fun book to read, and overall just a really fucking fun thing to do. I like doing interviews, I think. I think I’d like to do more of them.

Anyway, Vol. 1 Brooklyn was kind enough to run the interview (lucky me: they were hoping to cover this and Aaron’s simultaneously-published essay collection already). Please go read it here: https://vol1brooklyn.com/2023/08/29/about-and-not-about-an-interview-with-aaron-burch/.

Beyond that I’ve been busy plugging along at my own writing and at my other work and household things. I’ve repainted (poorly, very poorly) our IKEA coffee cart, I’ve pulled a large number of weeds and cut away a bunch of invasive knotwood. I have read a number of books (though year-count-wise I’m still very low, not forgiving the months I spent reading Proust). We went to visit my friend Lisa’s new baby. My friend Alex and I did the 160k D2R2 route again. I’ve been drinking a lot of coffee. I went to a fun bar in an alley. I gave the first third of my novel to my friend Jonny to read for a gut-check and we talked about it at our other friend Nick’s place of work, and all three of us managed time for a beer, and it was lovely. We got a kitten and named her Moth, and George, our other cat, more or less likes having a kitten around. I’m happy that I don’t have any more long rides planned, but happy that my fitness is such that if one pops up that sounds fun I’d be able to do it. I’ve been meaning to go to art galleries and openings and though I’m subscribed to a bunch of newsletters I haven’t managed the time yet (but soon). I haven’t been watching much of La Vuelta. I’ve started and not finished a number of movies. I got sick and then I got better. I was excited to find cat litter refill bags for our plastic containers. I’ve been writing fiction every morning for a little over a month and it feels good, very good.
